Big water
Just paddle
The whole beach had
changed its mind overnight.
Water ran sideways with a
pineapple under its arm.
Sandbars traded places like
walruses changing buses.
A puddle had borrowed
a canoe.
The sea came through
wearing enormous slippers.
A smooth ribbon of water
zigzagged like spaghetti
avoiding a fork.
A pelican stood beside it
holding a tollbooth sign.
Nobody had any coins.
The ribbon bent left.
Then right.
A wave ran over it
on roller skates.
The water zigzagged
as a seagull tried to keep
notes.
It ran out of toes.
